Rachel and Kirsty are riding a river ferry to Camp Stargaze, where they and their parents will be spending a week. Mrs Tate points out a beautiful sunset over the river, but as they all watch, the colours fade until the only light left is a weird greenish glow. The adults speculate the colour might come from some odd combination of clouds or reflections, but the girls wonder if there might be magic involved.
At the camp, the families find several large tents set up in a field around a dome-topped observatory building. One of the camp leaders, named Peter, tells the Tates and Walkers they’re in the “Twilight Tent”, which they find is printed with stars and has three sectioned-off bedrooms inside. The girls’ parents examine the camp map and give the girls permission to explore the area while they unpack. Outside, a group of children surround Peter, asking questions about the sky-which is still greenish and the sun hasn’t appeared to move. Looking closely, Rachel spies a speck of gold amid the green light, which begins to move, both girls follow it to the ferry dock where the light turns out to be Ava the Sunset Fairy.
Ava is in a hurry and after greeting the girls only tells them Jack Frost is responsible for the green sunset before whisking them to Fairyland, with their permission, to explain further. There, the fairy king and queen introduce the rest of the Twilight Fairies and lead everyone to the Seeing Pool. The picture in the pool shows the palace bedroom where the Twilight Fairies sleep and when they hid their bags of special fairy dust under their pillows before heading to a party the previous night. In swooped seven Goblins led by Jack Frost once the fairies had left, stealing the bags and then having a pillow fight. Jack Frost ordered the goblins to stop before sending them with the bags to the human world to hide them. He told them that he didn’t like the night time and wished to control it himself. When the girls agree to help find the bags, Titania sends them back to the human world with Ava to get started.
Ava hides in Rachel’s pocket while the girls find their parents for the barbecue, which is starting. Two boys ahead of them at the tables start grabbing lots of food and Rachel notices by their ears and noses that they’re goblins, blending in because the light makes everyone look green. Overhearing the goblins’ argument while eating, the girls find out that one of the goblins had had Ava’s bag of sunbeam fairy dust, but misplaced it. When everyone but the goblins are done leading, Peter announces a game of hide and seek in the nearby woods. The girls take the opportunity to search among the trees, but have to hide in a bush to avoid being found and sent back to the campsite. Once Peter has passed by, the girls keep looking. Rachel is the first to notice Ava’s bag at the base of a tree, but a goblin is closer and sees it too. Luckily, Peter spots the goblin and sends him back to the campsite with the others who have been found.
Ava turns the girls into fairies so they won’t be found themselves, but more footsteps turn out to be the second goblin, who grabs the bag in triumph. The first goblin, having evaded Peter, returns. Thinking quickly, Kirsty asks Ava to conjure a green bag of green glitter, which (as she suspected) the goblins find much more interesting. There’s a moment of worry when one goblin suggests taking both bags, but to the fairies’ relief the other goblin disagrees with him and drops Ava’s bag on the ground. Ava retrieves it and turns the girls human just in time to hide in Rachel’s pocket as Peter approaches, announcing that everyone else has been found. Back at camp, Ava thanks the girls and treats all the campers to a spectacular, colourful sunset on her way back to Fairyland.
