Kirsty is staying with Rachel for a week, and they’re out shopping on Monday. Rachel’s friend Karen Lewis and her mother greet the girls outside a dancewear store, where Karen has just gotten a new pair of tap shoes. After chatting a bit, the girls take a shortcut through the park, where a brass sundial is looking a lot more sparkly than usual. From a door in its base that Rachel is sure wasn’t there before comes a frog in a vest who introduces himself as Francis the Royal Time Guard, a friend of Bertram. He brings them to Fairyland, where there’s trouble: the seven Fun Day Fairies can’t recharge the magic that makes each day of the week fun because their flags have been stolen. Queen Titania uses the golden pool to show the girls how the magic works - each morning, Francis opens the Book of Days and hangs the corresponding Fun Day Flag on the flagpole of the Time Tower. When the sun shines on the sparkly sun shape in the middle of the flag, like it did on Megan’s that morning, Fun Day magic comes down to the waiting fairy’s wand to charge it so people can have fun that day.

This week, however, Jack Frost snatched the Monday Flag before Megan could charge her wand. He then sent goblins to steal the other six flags, and Francis was outnumbered and couldn’t stop them. They decorated the ice castle with all the flags and were having so much fun that some even felt bold enough to play tricks on Jack Frost, who sent the flags to the human world in retaliation. Missing the fun they’d had, some goblins decided to try and get the flags back and would be looking in the human world for them.

Francis finds a clue to the Monday Flag’s whereabouts in the Book of Days, it seems to be referring to tap shoes. Rachel guesses that it means Karen’s dance lesson at the town hall that afternoon, and the queen sends her and Kirsty there with Megan to help them. Karen is on the steps looking glum; she’d been dropped off early for class but somehow misplaced her dance bag with the new shoes in it. The dance instructor Miss Henry, who’d overheard, says she’ll let Karen borrow some spare shoes for the day while Rachel and Kirsty offer to look for the bag. Following a muttering noise, the girls and Megan go around the building and find a goblin trying to pull the Monday Flag out of Karen’s dance bag. Seeing them, he flees to the clock tower and locks himself in.

Soon, the girls can see one of the clock’s hands jiggling. Turning into fairies, they fly up to find that the goblin is playing with the clock machinery, but there’s no way into the tower. Rachel says the hourly chimes are loud enough to scare him out, and Megan uses magic to move the clock so it begins to ring right then. Sure enough, the goblin comes racing out of the tower, dropping the bag on the way as he tries to cover his ears. Megan retrieves her flag and the girls deliver the bag to Karen inside, where no one is having any fun dancing either. Megan brings the girls with her when she recharges her Fun Day magic in Fairyland, then returns with them to make the dance class fun. As the girls watch, Miss Henry stops the class and pulls out a box of hats, canes, and boas. With the accessories, all the dancers enjoy themselves enough to master some more complicated steps.

Trivia[]

  • When Karen is talking to Rachel outside the dancewear store, she says her class is in the afternoon. However, during the class, the town clock says 10:15 before Megan changes it to 11:00 to ring the bells.
