Rachel and Kirsty are planning to make gingerbread men for when Rachel’s gran visits on a windy Friday, but they can’t find flour, eggs, or the cookie cutter. Rachel’s mum goes to look upstairs in case the cookie cutter got put away, and Kirsty says the missing ingredients might be the fault of the missing Friday Flag. Gran arrives, greeting both girls warmly and insisting Kirsty call her Gran as well. She says she almost felt like someone was following her on the way there, while Rachel notices a silky lilac scarf around her neck. Gran unties the scarf, talking about how she bought it at a secondhand shop, and the girls realise that it’s the Friday Flag. Rachel’s mother greets Gran and goes to look in the kitchen again, still not finding the ingredients they need.

Mrs. Walker leaves to get flour and eggs, bringing Buttons the dog with her for a walk at the same time. The girls resolve to guard Gran from the goblins they know are nearby - Kirsty saw one looking through the window. The doorbell rings, and an unsubtle disguised goblin claims to be a salesman, offering some marigolds dug up from the Walkers’ flowerbeds in exchange for a lilac scarf. Rachel tells him off and Kirsty retrieves the marigolds when he drops them and flees. Freya the Friday Fairy emerges from between the flowers once the door’s closed, asking if the girls know where the flag is like the Book of Days said they would. Rachel explains, and Freya warns her there are several goblins around, including two she saw by the back door. Knowing that a small goblin could fit through the dog-flap in the back door, Rachel leads Kirsty and Freya into the living room in time to thwart two goblins who’d snuck up on Gran from behind the sofa.

The girls offer to show Gran around the garden, which is nice and sunny despite the wind. Kirsty calls Gran’s attention to the birdbath and not the goblin sliding down the washing line, and Freya uses magic to make Gran drop her purse when a goblin reaches down from a tree, but they know they can’t keep the goblins away from Gran and keep her from noticing the goblins for very long. Rachel asks if she can look at Gran’s new scarf, and Gran holds it out to her, but a gust of wind blows the flag around the corner of the house. The girls hastily offer to fetch it and rush to find a goblin playing with the flag, wearing it different ways and admiring himself in the reflection in the glass side door. At Kirsty’s suggestion, Freya turns the goblin’s reflection the same purple as the flag and claims the flag has turned him purple while the girls tease him. The goblin throws the flag, which shrinks to Fairyland size as Rachel picks it up, but then he notices it’s only his reflection that’s purple and charges at the girls.

Luckily, Buttons arrives home with Rachel’s mum, his barks scaring all the goblins away. Freya takes the Friday Flag and creates a copy for Rachel to give to Gran before returning to Fairyland. The girls and Gran enjoy making gingerbread with some fairy shaped cookie cutters provided by Friday Fun Day magic.

Trivia[]

  • Her hair is similar to Rachel's hair.

Etymology[]

Her name might be taken from the Norse goddesses Frigg and Freyja, whose names ‘Friday’ originated from.
