Kirsty, who’s visiting Rachel for the Easter holidays and about to join her for a horseback riding lesson, points out something moving on Rachel’s bed. It’s her magic diary from Fairyland, pages fluttering and a message appears: “We need your help!” Immediately, both girls use their fairy dust lockets to take them to Fairyland, where they find themselves in front of a large building with seven fairies they haven’t met and the Fairy King and Queen. The queen introduces the seven Sporty Fairies, who show them inside the Fairyland Arena, a huge stadium that can transform magically depending on what kind of sporting event will be taking place. Each Sporty Fairy owns a magical piece of equipment with which they make sure sports are fun, exciting, safe and fair, but now all these objects have been stolen by Jack Frost’s Goblins.

Queen Titania transports the group to the seeing pool to show what happened: Early that morning, several goblins near the Arena had been trying to play various sports and doing so badly that the Sporty Fairies came to help. While the fairies were distracted, seven more goblins snuck into the Arena locker room where the magic equipment was stored and used icy copies of the locker keys to open the lockers and take the equipment. One goblin mentioned using the magical equipment to win the Fairyland Olympics at the end of the week, hiding in the human world to practise until then. Once the image in the pool fades, King Oberon explains that the Fairyland Olympics are linked to sports in the human world and can’t be postponed without disrupting human sports even more and both girls volunteer to help recover the stolen equipment, which should turn up at various human sporting events as the goblins practice. Kirsty remembers their riding lesson that day and invites Helena the Horseriding Fairy to come with them and look for her magic hard hat.

At the stables, the girls find chaos. The frazzled instructor Vivian directs them to the ponies they’ll be riding and says she’ll meet them in the paddock, trying to help the other riders who are having trouble. From Kirsty’s pocket, Helena says her missing hard hat is responsible for the mess, but she can sense it nearby. Fixing Kirsty’s stirrup and Rachel’s pony’s bit, Helena follows the girls to the paddock where they see a small boy riding a grey horse very well on closer inspection, but they realise the boy is a goblin wearing Helena’s hat. At Rachel’s suggestion, Helena conjures a trail of sugar lumps that lead the grey horse to Kirsty and Rachel, but the goblin gets suspicious and rides away before Helena can grab her hat. The girls mount their ponies and give chase, riding smoothly when they’re close behind the goblin with the hat, but when he pulls ahead the girls begin to lose control of their ponies. The goblin jumps a tall hedge, leaving the girls outside the hat’s range and Kirsty nearly falls off her pony before Helena turns her and Rachel into fairies to keep chasing him.

Seeing another jump ahead of the goblin, Kirsty suggests that Helena use her magic to undo the hat’s chin strap. When the grey horse jumps, the loosened hat flies off the goblin’s head, shrinking to fit a fairy as the girls catch it. Without the hat’s magic, the goblin tumbles off the horse into a water trough that Helena’s magic moved to catch him. Putting on the hat, Helena turns the girls back into humans and returns to Fairyland just as Vivian arrives, thanking them for finding Mischief (the grey horse, who had gotten loose in the chaos earlier). Mounting their ponies for their lesson, the girls exchange excited whispers about their upcoming week.

Trivia[]

  • In the U.S version, the note asking for help is found on a slip of paper inside Rachel's music box, since U.S readers would not know when the girls had received magic diaries.
