Kirsty's family and Rachel have been invited to the birthday party of Alexander Willow, a friend of the Tates and a producer of musicals. It’s the first “grown up” party the girls have been to. When Mrs Tate mentions there will be jazz dancing (and explains what jazz dancing is), the girls exchange worried looks knowing the Jazz Ribbon is still missing. Alexander lives in a large, fancy manor house and the party is set up in a large white marquee tent in the back garden. A band is playing a lively tune, but thankfully no one has tried to dance yet. When the girls are offered fruit punch, Kirsty is the first to notice Jessica the Jazz Fairy perched on the rim of her glass under the paper umbrella. Just then, the band’s saxophone player announce that the cast of Alexander’s newest musical “Jazz It Up” will be performing a dance number as a birthday surprise. Rachel hides her eyes, but Kirsty and Jessica convince her to look at the dance, which is going perfectly, meaning the ribbon must be very nearby.
Kirsty spots a rather small dancer with his costume scarf around his face and a pink ribbon around his top hat. Jessica realises he’s a goblin. Hoping to catch him as the dancers leave the stage, the girls sneak around to the side and watch as the goblin takes bow after bow, to the annoyance of the saxophone player and the amusement of the audience who assume it’s part of the show. When the goblin finally exits the stage, he moves his scarf off his long nose and sniffs the air. Jessica turns the girls into fairies in case he’s sniffed them out and plans to freeze them, but it turns out the goblin is after the smell of fresh brownies from the kitchen in the house. He tries to steal one, but the cook scolds him, assuming his green hands have been grass-stained and demanding he wash his hands before taking a brownie. Instead, the goblin freezes her with a touch and steals several more brownies. Jessica attempts to use his distraction to untie the ribbon from his hat, but he turns around and notices the girls, trying to freeze them.
The goblin chases the girls and Jessica out the door and into the garden. Noticing the pool nearby, Rachel asks Jessica to turn her and Kirsty human. As the goblin runs towards them, Rachel explains her plan to Kirsty and stands at the edge of the pool. Just when he’s about to reach them, the girls dodge to each side and the goblin careens past them right into the water. Once he climbs out of the pool, he doesn’t take much convincing to hand over the ribbon in exchange for Jessica drying him off with her magic. After he leaves, Jessica reattaches the ribbon to her wand and thanks the girls before disappearing in a puff of sparkles.
Back in the tent, it’s clear that the recent dance was a disaster, chairs knocked over, people looking discouraged, but more pink sparkles from where Jessica is perched on a star decoration soon has the band playing again and everyone dancing well.
Trivia[]
- Jessica's beautiful pink dress is a chic 1920s style and her loose-fitting outfit means she can perform high kicks and splits and she is the first fairy to have her outfit inspired by the 1920s era, the second being Darcey the Dance Diva Fairy.
- Alexander produces Broadway musicals instead of West End musicals in the U.S version.
