Katie the Kitten Fairy is the first fairy in the Pet Keeper Fairies series.

Katie looks after Shimmer, the magic pet kitten. Shimmer can change her size and take on any feline shape (once she turned into a tiger to protect a lost kitten). Katie's wand sends out sparkling, amber-coloured magic. Katie is a bit cat-like herself. She's very neat and fussy, and when she's nearby she makes some human people sneeze! Katie is often found curled up fast asleep in a sunbeam.

Appearance[]

Katie has long, straight, glossy black hair pinned back by two butterfly-shaped hair clips. She wears a yellow strapless dress with pink edging, light pink ballet pumps on her dainty feet and a pink butterfly necklace. Her wings are pointed and light pink-tinted.

Rachel catching a ball — Rachel catches a ball thrown for her by Kirsty

Rachel has come to visit Kirsty for spring break and the girls are playing catch in the park. They spot a black dog chasing a little grey-and-white kitten, just as the dog is about to catch it, the kitten turns into a tiger in a burst of sparkles and scares the dog away before turning back into a kitten. Suspecting fairy magic, both girls follow the kitten, which shrinks itself to fit through a hole in a fence, then uses a bit more magic to knock a fish finger off a man’s plate after failing to convince him to feed it. In a wooded section of the park, six goblins appear from the trees with nets to capture the kitten, which jumps into Rachel’s arms to escape. One goblin says the kitten belongs to Jack Frost, but the girls don’t believe him and their suspicions are confirmed when the kitten uses magic to speak to them and explain it actually belongs to Katie the Kitten Fairy. The goblins lunge at the girls, but Kirsty is ready with a pinch of fairy dust that whisks her, Rachel and the kitten away to Fairyland out of reach.

All pet keeper fairies — All the Pet Keeper Fairies

In Fairyland, the girls meet the king and queen and seven new fairies. One fairy, Katie, greets the kitten happily, revealing its name is Shimmer, while the king and queen introduce all seven Pet Keeper Fairies to the girls. It turns out that Jack Frost has decided to hold the Pet Keeper Fairies’ magical pets hostage until he gets a pet of his own, which hasn’t happened because pets in Fairyland choose their owners and not the other way around. Meowing to Katie, Shimmer explains that she and the other magic pets have escaped the Ice Castle and got lost in the human world and that a group of goblins has been sent to recapture them. The girls agree to help find the magic pets before the goblins do.

Just then, Shimmer tells Katie there’s a homeless kitten in trouble in the human world. She and Katie want to help, but with the added threat of goblins Kirsty and Rachel decide to go with them for backup. Katie’s fairy dust takes the four of them back to the park, where a tiny Shimmer amuses both girls with his playful midair antics as they look for the other kitten. When he catches its scent, he grows to normal kitten size and runs on the ground to a tall tree where a very young tabby kitten is stuck. Shimmer and Katie confirm that the kitten is too scared to climb down and Shimmer points out a boy at the top of the nearby jungle gym who should climb up and fetch it.

Katie and Shimmer hide in the tree, Shimmer shrinking to his usual size, while the girls tell the boy (who introduces himself as James) about the kitten. He’s eager to help and rescues the cat quickly, the girls notice a bit of sparkle around the two of them when it jumps onto his shoulder. Since the kitten has no collar, James’s father agrees he can keep it if no one reports it missing and James quickly names the kitten Dusty, which the girls find extra fitting because of the fairy dust they saw. After they leave, Kirsty has to quickly snatch Shimmer away from a long chain of goblins hanging from a higher branch, who promptly fall out of the tree when trying to grab him. Katie speculates they’ll be sent after a different pet next and thanks both girls before saying goodbye and returning to Fairyland with Shimmer.

Katie's favourite foods are some milk and a tuna sandwich.
Katie’s cat, Shimmer, can change into a tiger and can shrink and grow to different sizes, as specified in the book.
She is featured in her own Choose Your Own Magic activity book.
Shimmer is referred to as a female cat in Chapter 3, "Missing Magic Pets," but as a male in Chapter 4, "Girls On Guard" and for the remainder of the book, this inconsistency is present in both the UK and U.S versions.
