The evening that Kirsty is supposed to leave Rachel's house, both girls worry that they haven’t found the missing fairy diamond yet. They decide to find it themselves, and just then Rachel’s musical jewellery box (a gift from Jasmine the Present Fairy) begins to jingle. Both girls listen closely and hear a message that the magic diamond is in Fairyland but out of reach. The girls use their magic lockets to take them to Fairyland, where they land under a twisty tree and are greeted by the king and queen and all seven Jewel Fairies, none of which have wings at the moment. The girls still have wings because they’ve just turned into fairies, but that won’t last long if the diamond stays missing. Lucy the Diamond Fairy steps forward and says the fairies suspect that the diamond is in the tree somewhere, as four goblins had been spotted the previous day arguing over who should climb up and guard it.
The girls volunteer to fly up and look, checking every branch and blossom. But there’s no sign of a sparkle, and they reach the top just as Fairyland’s sun sets and the stars appear. One seems bigger and more glittery than the others, and the girls realise it’s the magic diamond - smaller than the other jewels had been in the human world. Before they can reach it, an icy gust of wind sends them hurtling back into the tree.
Jack Frost himself is guarding the diamond, flying on a draft of cold air. He sends more freezing wind and bolts of ice magic at the girls, who have to climb down the tree to avoid being frozen. Back on the ground, they tell Lucy what happened. Kirsty asks if there’s any fairy who can still fly and grab the diamond while she and Rachel distract Jack Frost, and Lucy gets an idea. She sends up a spray of fairy dust to call not a fairy, but a friendly winged Pegasus horse who lives nearby. He carries Lucy on his back while Kirsty and Rachel fly behind him. Above the clouds, they split up and the girls fly towards Jack Frost, once again dodging his ice magic. Both girls glimpse Pegasus and Lucy nearing the diamond and taunt Jack Frost to keep his attention as Lucy grabs the diamond. However, Jack Frost hears Pegasus’s wings and turns to attack; Pegasus dodges the ice bolt so suddenly that Lucy drops the diamond. As soon as Kirsty catches it, a spell from Jack Frost turns her wings to ice and she starts to fall. Rachel grabs her, dodging another attack, but her wings aren’t strong enough to carry both of them and they drop right onto Pegasus’s back.
The winged horse flies toward the palace at Lucy’s urging, with Jack Frost still in pursuit. Once the courtyard is within sight, Lucy takes the diamond from Kirsty and sends it straight into Queen Titania’s crown, where it and the other jewels send up a shower of multicoloured sparkles. Kirsty’s wings unfreeze, and an angry Jack Frost sends a storm of icicles at the girls, which is quickly blocked by a stream of golden sparks from the queen’s wand. The two spells collide over and over, and Titania forces Jack Frost’s magic back at him, blowing him away.
Once he’s gone, the fairy parade commences as usual, with every fairy recharging her wand from the tiara’s magic. Lucy goes first, gaining her wings back immediately. After the parade, King Oberon gives each girl a ring with a tiny chip of each type of gemstone they helped save, and Queen Titania refills their magic lockets before sending them home to Rachel’s room just in time for Kirsty to go home.
Trivia[]
- The girls love flying but Kirsty sometimes finds it scary, especially when she's a fairy and Jack Frost is chasing her.
Etymology[]
Lucy's name is a reference to The Beatles song, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. The song was written by a member of the band, John Lennon. His son Julian showed him a painting he did at school of his classmate Lucy "in the sky with diamonds". He most likely said this as the popular nursery rhyme "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" features the lyrics: "up above the world so high, like a diamond in the sky".
