Rachel and Kirsty are joining Matt and Lucas and the other campers on a lantern-lit boat ride across Camp Stargaze’s Mirror Lake. Peter the camp leader explains that the lake is named this because it’s sheltered from the wind and usually flat and calm like a mirror. He expresses hope that the clouds clear that night, because the moon is full and looks especially pretty reflected in the water. At the other side, the campers divide into two groups: Rachel, Kirsty, Matt, Lucas and four other campers in a group led by a woman named Alison. The groups go to opposite sides of a cove, Peter wondering aloud at a bright light on one of the hilltops nearby. With Morse code charts and handheld lights, the groups send a few messages back and forth.
A loud shout startles the group: someone calling that they’re lost and need help. Peter and the campers run towards the sound and shine their lights around, but find no one. When they return to the shore, their signal lantern is missing. Kirsty looks where Rachel is pointing her beam and sees a boulder that appears to be sparkling a little. Perched on the rock is Maisie the Moonbeam Fairy, who tells them that the shout had been a goblin trying to distract the campers while another goblin stole their lantern. She says the goblins climbed up the same hill with the bright light on top and casts a spell that will make it seem like the girls are still by the shore. Maisie turns the girls into fairies so they can reach the hilltop faster.
At the top of the hill, the three fairies find that the goblins have stolen several lights and even a generator from the camp and tied all the lights together. The two goblins that stole the signal lantern turn it back on and add it to the pile, while another sprinkles sparkly white moon dust from Maisie’s bag over all the lights, making them even brighter. They begin to brag that they’ve created their own moon, which will be full every night so no one has to worry about darkness. Maisie worries that people will investigate the light and find the goblins, destroying Fairyland’s secret forever. Maisie tries to sneak over and turn off the generator, but a goblin happens to adjust it brighter right then and grabs her, tying the sparkly fairy to the makeshift moon to add to its light.
Rachel and Kirsty hover nearby, wondering what to do. Rachel realises the goblins will want more light and maybe even go after the reflection of the real moon in the lake. But Maisie will need to clear the clouds for the reflection to appear and the girls need some disguise for the goblins to take them seriously. Rachel whispers her plan to Maisie, who turns her and Kirsty human sized with lab coats and glasses. As “astronomers”, the girls examine the makeshift moon, claiming that it’s a clever idea but will need much more light. Maisie clears the clouds as a goblin complains they’ve collected every source of light they could find and Rachel points out the newly revealed reflection of the moon in the lake. The goblins rush downhill with the magic bag and the girls take the opportunity to untie Maisie and turn off the generator. Maisie turns the girls into fairies and they race down to the lake, where the goblins are wading in the shallows and trying to grab the moon’s reflection. One glances up at the hill and sees that the makeshift moon is much dimmer, his gesture of surprise and dismay sends the magic bag flying out of his hand. All three fairies together manage to catch the bag and Maisie takes it, announcing she’ll have to return all the stolen lights and that one moon in the sky is enough.
On their way back to rejoin the other campers, Kirsty finds that the stolen signal lantern has appeared on the path in front of them. She and Rachel bring it back to the group, truthfully saying they’d found it on the path and Peter uses it to ask the other group to join them for hot chocolate.
Trivia[]
- Without Maisie's moon dust, even the fairies sleep all day.
- In the U.S version, she is called Anna the Moonbeam Fairy, causing the U.S name for Anna the Arctic Fox Fairy to be changed to Nora.
