Rachel and Kirsty gather firewood for a late-night campfire and feast at Camp Stargaze. There are to be fireworks at midnight, and with the help of some camper friends the girls are able to find lots of wood and a pretty glade sprinkled with little starlike flowers. Back at the firepit, however, Peter the activities leader can’t find any matches, and Mrs Walker has to provide some from her emergency kit. But even when the firewood is lit, there doesn’t seem to be much heat—nothing they try to cook over the fire even gets hot.

Morgan the Midnight Fairy disguises her arrival as a shower of sparks from the campfire, and explains in a whisper to the girls that any sort of midnight party can’t go right if she doesn’t have her bag of magic night dust. Just then, Peter announces a game in which each person in the circle adds another sentence to a ghost story—which quickly turns silly as people add ridiculous ideas. One boy looks scared, though, and points out a “green monster” just outside the circle. Most of the campers assume he’s playing along, but the girls know his description of the “monster” matches that of a goblin. Announcing a trip for more firewood, the girls set off into the forest, where Morgan turns them into fairies to search faster.

Eventually, the three fairies come across another campfire, where several goblins are enjoying various roasted foods. One uses some sparkly dust from Morgan’s magic bag to conjure a pile of bogmallows (the goblin version of marshmallows) to toast. The goblins then have an argument over the bag, and one sits on it to prevent the others from taking it.

Rachel suggests frightening the goblin from his seat with a ghost story, but Morgan points out the goblins will be suspicious if they see fairies. At Kirsty’s suggestion, Morgan uses magic to make her look like a goblin and Rachel look like a ghost. The ghost story Kirsty tells is quite frightening and full of Pogwurzels, and Rachel appears as the ghost right on cue. The goblins are so frightened they begin to run, but the one who had sat on the bag notices the disguise magic wearing off and grabs the bag as he flees. Morgan turns the girls back into fairies to give chase, but the goblins keep tossing the bag between each other so there’s no chance of snatching it.

A glimpse of the stars reminds Rachel of the glade full of starlike flowers and a steep slope of slippery pine needles near it. Once she explains her plan to the other two, Morgan darts ahead whenever the path forks to herd the goblins in the right direction. The goblin with the bag is the first to reach the treacherous slope, and he slips so suddenly that the bag flies from his hands and Kirsty is able to catch it. She gives the bag to Morgan, who sends silvery dust flying in the direction of the campfire, turns the girls human, and conjures bundles of firewood for them to carry back.

At the campfire, the sausages and marshmallows are cooking nicely, and there’s time for a sing-along before the midnight fireworks. At the finale of the fireworks display, sparkly explosions spell out “Enjoy the Midnight Magic”, which both girls know is Morgan’s doing.
