Luckily she's also the most organised.

After buying a squirt gun for Rachel's young cousin Danny’s upcoming birthday, Rachel and Kirsty are walking home through the rain past a pretty fountain with statues of a mermaid and dolphins. A little girl near the fountain wishes aloud for a dolphin of her own, and with a faint tinkling only Rachel and Kirsty seem to hear, a dolphin-shaped balloon comes floating towards her. After she and her mother leave, a little boy tosses a coin into the fountain, wishing the rain would stop so he could play outside with his father. The rain stops immediately, alerting the girls that the fairy sapphire with its wish-granting magic must be nearby. Once everyone is gone, they begin to search the square. They find Sophie the Sapphire Fairy sitting in a letterbox, and Kirsty decides to look at the fountain itself. The mermaid statue holds up a dish with three ugly cherubs climbing up it, and water pours from spouts around the dish into the wide basin. In the mermaid’s hand, Kirsty spies a twinkle of blue. She takes off her shoes, rolls up her jeans, and wades to the statue to take the sapphire, but as soon as she’s grabbed it a goblin who she’d mistaken for a cherub hits her with a large splash of water from the fountain’s upper dish.
Two goblins begin shoving and splashing at Kirsty, who loses her grip on the sapphire and drops it in the fountain. Rachel helps her out of the water as both goblins begin looking for the jewel. Rachel offers Kirsty her coat, but instead Sophie uses the last of her wish magic to grant Kirsty’s wish of being warm and dry. Then Rachel comes up with a plan: Sophie will drop the shopping bag on one goblin’s head while the girls use their umbrella to fend off the other. Both girls wade barefoot into the fountain, Rachel swinging the umbrella like a sword while Sophie covers her target goblin with the bag. The other goblin kicks at the water to keep Kirsty from seeing the sapphire until Rachel opens the umbrella to block him. It’s hard to see the jewel against the blue tiles lining the fountain, but Kirsty feels around and grabs it just as a third, previously unnoticed goblin attacks both girls with Danny’s squirt gun. He aims several shots of water at Sophie, who barely dodges each one, as the other goblins extricate themselves from the bag and the umbrella. The girls are cornered, and Sophie reports there are people coming down the street, but then Kirsty remembers she’s holding sapphire full of wish magic and wishes for the goblins to turn into fish.
The girls gather the squirt gun, bag, and umbrella and leave the fountain, wishing to be warm and dry again as soon as Sophie has recharged her wand. Reassuring them that the goblin-fish will not be stuck in the fountain forever (they should have more to worry about from displeasing Jack Frost), Sophie sends the sapphire back to Fairyland and tries to fly after it, but her wings start to fade and she can’t stay in the air. Rachel and Kirsty realise the fairy diamond - the last magical jewel they need to find - has been missing too long. They send Sophie to Fairyland with some fairy dust from their magic lockets, resolving to find the diamond the very next day before Kirsty has to go home.
Trivia[]
- Sophie is best friends with Zara the Starlight Fairy since the sapphires that flow from Sophie's wand look so beautiful in Zara's starlight.
