Rachel's parents have just dropped her and Kirsty off at the Morristown Aquarium, where they aren’t surprised to find that no one’s having any fun. They decide to look at the seahorse exhibit first, where Kirsty notices Thea the Thursday Fairy as soon as they’re alone in the room. Thea is riding a seahorse, waving to the girls and gesturing for them to meet her by a seahorse statue across the room. While waiting, the girls notice a goblin snorkeling in the eel tank, clearly looking for the Thursday Flag. Thea appears, completely dry thanks to her magic. She assures the girls that she’s already checked the smaller tanks and her flag isn’t anywhere that goblin will find it. The rhyme of the day says to look for the Thursday Flag on the back of a whale.

Rachel checks her brochure and leads the way to a whale shark exhibit. Neither of the huge fish has a flag on its back, but two goblins wearing scuba gear are searching the tank. Luckily, the pink thing they grab turns out to be only seaweed. Both goblins are then badly frightened by the curious whale sharks, which they don’t know are harmless filter feeders. Rachel says there’s also a beluga whale exhibit, which they’ll have to pass through a clear tunnel under the largest tank to reach. While Kirsty greets a turtle through the glass, Rachel notices a sunken pirate ship further into the tank, with a silvery-pink flag on its mast. The ship’s name is “The Whale”. Kirsty and Rachel distract the three goblins who’ve followed them into the tunnel disguised as little boys by pretending not to notice them and talking loudly about how the flag must be in the beluga exhibit.

After a loudspeaker announces that the otters will be fed soon, drawing everyone else out of the tunnel, Thea turns the girls into fairies with a little extra magic that will let them breathe underwater. She leads the way under an access door for staff and up to the surface of the tank, where all three jump in and head straight for the pirate ship. It takes both girls to unhook the flag and tow it to Thea, who shrinks her flag to Fairyland size then uses magic to create a replacement flag that looks only slightly different.

Four goblins in scuba gear emerge from the shipwreck and begin chasing the girls and Thea, who are too tiny to be very fast in the water. Fortunately, the turtle Kirsty saw earlier offers them a ride and leads the goblins on a very fast chase around the tank before ferrying the girls and Thea to the surface. Thanking him, they climb out of the tank, drying off instantly with a bit more of Thea’s magic. Back in the empty tunnel, Thea turns the girls back into humans and returns to Fairyland to recharge her Fun Day magic. Rachel and Kirsty head to the otter exhibit, where neither the people nor the otters seem to be having any fun until subtle pink sparkles puff from the back of the tank and the girls glimpse Thea once more behind a rock. There’s still a bit of time left before Rachel’s parents pick them up, so she and Kirsty decide to see the beluga exhibit for themselves.

Trivia[]

  • Thea's favourite thing to do on a Thursday morning is to teach young fairies how to dance a fairy jig.
  • Rachel and Kirsty love to swim through the water with their fairy friends. Fairy magic makes them warm and dry as soon as they're back on land.

Etymology[]

Thea is named after a friend of the book's author, Sue Mongredien. In the Special Thanks section, the book is dedicated to "Thea Rose Killacky Wheeler".
