Rachel and Kirsty are attending an arts and crafts event at the Tippington Community Centre, where Mrs Walker is running a scrapbooking table. Because the Wednesday flag is missing, however, no one is enjoying themselves. Remembering the Fairy Queen says to let magic find you, the girls decide to make bracelets at a jewellery table. The man in charge of the table steps away for a moment, and Kirsty finds Willow the Wednesday Fairy in a tiny drawer when she looks for pink beads. Wednesday’s rhyming clue mentions following a trail of glitter, so after Willow magically finishes the girls’ bracelets they set off, finding a trail of not just glitter but also various bits of craft supplies. At the quilting table, the girls see some glittery fabric that looks like the Wednesday Flag, but is too small. Willow says the flag must be in pieces and not to worry, she can repair it with magic.

Rachel asks if she can take the sparkly fabric home for a project, and the woman at the quilting table hands her the one piece and looks around for more. She says there were two other pieces but she can’t find them, and they aren’t in the quilt. Luckily, the trail of odds and ends continues to the origami table and disappears under the tablecloth. Rachel peeks underneath and sees two cheerful goblins, their arms full of craft supplies, who luckily don’t notice her. She tells Willow and Kirsty, and Willow finds a hidden corner to turn the girls into fairies. They fly low so they won’t be seen and duck under the nearest tablecloth as soon as they can. The tables are set up end to end, so the space underneath is like a long tunnel with boxes of supplies under the various craft stations. Peeking around one box, the girls and Willow see the two goblins making a collage, tossing aside things they aren’t using including a paper butterfly. Rachel notices another piece of the Wednesday Flag among the piles; the goblins clearly don’t know what they have. At Kirsty’s suggestion, Willow enchants the paper butterfly to flutter past the goblins and distract them while Rachel takes the flag piece, which shrinks to fit in her pocket with the first one. Meanwhile, the goblins have caught the butterfly which is now an ordinary piece of origami, confusing them.

Around a corner under the tables are two more goblins bragging about the piece of flag they carry and planning to play a trick on the other two. Rachel remembers an open tub of clay under one table and wonders aloud if the goblins will put the flag down to make hand impressions if given the idea. Reaching the clay before the goblins do involves a quick dodge outside the tablecloth, and then the girls pretend to argue over who should get to go first. The goblins immediately join the argument, insisting they go first before even knowing what they’d be doing. The goblin with the flag refuses to let go, so Willow quickly suggests making foot prints instead. The moment the goblins jump onto the clay, she makes it harden so they’re stuck. The girls retrieve the last piece of the flag and fly a safe distance away with Willow, who tells them her spell will wear off the clay once the flag is back in Fairyland.

She repairs her flag and turns the girls into humans before vanishing with a promise to be back soon. The girls crawl out from under what turns out to be Mrs. Walker’s scrapbooking table, claiming when asked to have been helping clean up. Willow returns briefly under a table, suggesting that the girls try model painting before the event is over in an hour. The woman running the table is surprised to discover several unpainted fairy models among her supplies, but offers them to the girls and everyone else who notices. Both Rachel and Kirsty paint their models to look like Willow.

Trivia[]

  • Willow's flag is the prettiest of them all. It's green and gold and covered in glitter.
  • The book describes her as having a dress and green shoes despite the cover showing her with a t-shirt, skirt, and brown shoes.
  • In the US version of Willow, her magic is described as green sparkles when the girls first see her, but gold sparkles later on.
